When people shop for PMP exam prep, they compare price, format, instructors, and practice questions. Those all matter. But one question gets skipped, and it can decide whether you pass on your first try: on what date will you actually sit for the exam?
The answer depends on a sequence PMI requires, and most people don’t learn about it until after they’ve enrolled.
How the PMP process works
To take the PMP exam, you need to meet PMI’s eligibility requirements. One of them is 35 hours of project management education. You must complete those hours before you can submit your application.
Once you submit, PMI reviews your application. Some applications are selected for audit, which adds time. Only after approval can you schedule your exam, and then you’re working with whatever testing dates are available.
So the order is fixed: education hours, then application, then approval, then scheduling, then the exam.
What that means for most prep courses
In most programs, the prep course is where you earn your 35 hours. That means you can’t apply until the course is over. You finish class, submit your application, wait for approval, find an exam date, and then take the test.
That gap can stretch for weeks. During that time, the material you worked hard to learn starts to fade. Many people end up studying all over again before the exam, which costs time, energy, and confidence.
When you see a course described as getting you “exam-ready” in a few days, it’s worth asking what happens after those few days. Being ready on the last day of class doesn’t help much if your exam is a month away.
How Cheetah does it differently
Cheetah Learning built its program around a different order.
Before class begins, you complete the Cheetah pre-course. That’s where you earn your 35 hours of basic project management education in Cheetah’s proven self-paced 35 hour PM Basics program (STILL approved by PMI to qualify for the 35 hours of PM education), and it’s also where you complete your PMP eligibility application, with a Cheetah Coach working alongside you to get it right.
By the time you walk into class, your application is approved and your exam is scheduled for the day after your Cheetah class ends.
Your four day Cheetah accelerated exam prep class becomes your final, focused preparation, and the exam follows while everything is fresh. You study once, and you test once.
What it asks of you
This approach asks more of you up front. You need to finish the pre-course and your application on schedule, and you need to commit to an exam date before class starts. For people who want a clear finish line, that commitment is part of what makes it work. There’s no drifting, no “I’ll schedule it when I feel ready.”
The question to ask any provider
Whatever program you’re considering, ask this before you enroll: “On what date will I take the PMP exam?”
If the answer is “after you finish our course and your application is approved,” you now know there will be a gap, and you can plan for it.
If you’d rather go straight from class to exam, Cheetah’s process was designed for exactly that.
